New Works "From Life Alla Prima"

The following works are my current project of faces in both natural and artificial lights painted from life. It's been a tremendous learning experience for me and a great opportunity for new discoveries both technically and visually. It's allowing me to see what photo camera cannot record in terms of color and subtleties of the form and hopefully capture it in a "wet into wet" approach...

Plein Air Trip to Malibu, California, March 2008

The following 8 paintings are from recent trips to Malibu's "El Matador Beach". I painted there for a week trying to capture the character of this unique part of our California coastline. This is a wonderful spot for Plein Air painting, it offers a number of boulders and rocks everywhere, all shapes and sizes. It is particularly beautiful at sunset as the cliffs turn warm orange and the ocean gets tinted in purples and pinks. Lots of photographers and movie makers go there to shoot.

Malibu Paintings

Trip Bulgaria, 2007

The following paintings are inspired from my 2007 trip to Bulgaria. I had a great time visiting family and friends and of course looking for interesting subjects to paint. Although Bulgaria has become quite modern now, I was still able to find some rural villages up in the mountains where life is somewhat primitive. Some of the places I had a chance to visit were Boazat, Batoshevo, Apriltzi, Sevlievo, Balchik, Nesseber and Triavna. I took lots of photographs and completed the paintings as soon as I got back in the US.
